The word “Thai” means freedom. Thailand is the land of freedom, the land of unique culture and the only country in Southeast Asia that has never been colonized.

           Our country is situated in the heart of Southeast Asia.We are the gateway to Laos , Cambodia , Burma , and Malaysia . The country is divided into five regions: the mountains and the forests in the North; the Central Plain with vast rice fields; the semi-arid farm lands in the Northeast; the tropical lands in the East; and the coastline and beaches of peninsular South. Thailand has a population of approximately 64 million people in 2006, of which 85% are ethnic Thais, 10% Chinese and 5 % Mon, Indian, Islam and 10 different groups of mountain tribes. It is comprised of 76 provinces that are further divided into districts, sub-districts and villages.

           Thailand is a constitutional monarchy headed by His Majesty King Poomipol Adulyadate, the present king. The king has reigned for 60 years; in 2006, he is the longest-reigning monarch in Thailand and in the world!
