Chiang Mai Thai Language Center, recommended by "Lonely Planet" since the year 1996, is one of our major presentations of Thai culture for you. At the Thai Culture Holidays Building in Chiang Mai, we proudly offer Thai language lessons to foreigners who want to experience Thai culture through the Thai Language.
Thai language courses at Chiang Mai Thai Language Center are professionally created by Ms. Petchara Meesook, the former trainer of Thai language and Thai culture for the U.S. Peace Corps in Thailand. Our aim is to introduce Thai language to all foreigners whether a tourist or resident in Chiang Mai. Our teachers will create practical lessons based on dialogues and visual aids which include learning Thai culture while in the process of language training. Speaking, listening, reading and writing skills are taught in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. Classes are structured around students' abilities and interests.
Whether you are a tourist or a long-term resident in Thailand, you will find your time is spent in a relaxing and fun atmosphere at Chiang Mai Thai Language Center.

The Thai language, or pasa Thai, is linguistically unique. It contains 44 consonants and 32 vowels. Its grammatical structure is simpler than English and other European languages - what makes Thai very challenging is learning to recognize and pronounce its 5 different tones,

Thai language is a tonal language. There are 5 different tones; mid tone, low tone, falling tone, high tone and rising tone. The pitch at which the syllable is pronounced determines its meaning
For example:

How the tones sound
Mid tone : This is a common declaratory voice with no inflection.
Low tone : Example Don't! . This is a steady low tone, a tone below the common middle tone.
Descending or falling tone : Example You don't say! . In this case the tone rises then falls.
High tone : Example " Ouch ! This is a steady high tone, a tone above the common middle tone.
Rising tone : Example Oh really ? In this case the tone descends and then rises.

One of the benefits of studying at the CMT is our homestay option. If you choose, we can arrange either short or long term stays with a Thai family in a traditional village of farmers and artisans near Chiang Mai.
In addition to providing the best possible environment for practicing language skill, the home stay allows the foreign visitor to experience the "real" Thailand not usually seen by tourists. Via homestay, you will learn what life with a Thai family is like, experience authentic Thai culture, including great food, and make new friends.
